چکیده

Synthesis of nano-twinned pure Cu by Lu et al. [L. Lu, R. Schwaiger, Z. W. Shan, M. Dao, K. Lu, S. Suresh, Nano-sized twins induce high rate sensitivity of flow stress in pure copper, Acta Mater. 53 (2005) 2169–2179] has produced materials with extremely attractive properties of combined high strength, strain rate sensitivity, and ductility adequate for applications. This note explores the underlying mechanistic reasons for this via a model analysis of dislocation interaction with nano-twinned boundaries. Interestingly, we find that processes like cross-slip, that lead to the absorption and transmission of slip through twin boundaries yet are normally associated with rate insensitive behavior, can lead to high strength and rate sensitivity as observed in experiment. 2007 Acta Materialia Inc. Interfacial plasticity governs strain rate sensitivity and ductility in nanostructured metals.

Nano-twinned copper exhibits an unusual combination of ultrahigh strength and high ductility, along with increased strain-rate sensitivity. We develop a mechanistic framework for predicting the rate sensitivity and elucidating the origin of ductility in terms of the interactions of dislocations with interfaces. Using atomistic reaction pathway calculations, we show that slip transfer reactions ...

Uniaxial Compression Behavior of Bulk Nano-twinned Gold from Molecular Dynamics Simulation

Parallel molecular dynamics simulations were used to study the influence of pre-existing growth twin boundaries on the slip activity of bulk gold under uniaxial compression. The simulations were performed on a 3D, fully periodic simulation box at 300 K with a constant strain rate of 4×10 s. Different twin boundary interspacings from 2 nm to 16 nm were investigated. The strength of bulk nano-twi...

Some aspects of cross-slip mechanisms in metals and alloys

2014 Dislocation cross slip in FCC and HCP metals has been described in terms of various models. The development of these models is reviewed and their predictions are compared with recent experimental observations. Some macroscopic features of plastic deformation (creep activation energies, strength anomalies and deformation stages) are examined in the light of these microscopic mechanisms. J. ...

Crystal Engineering for Mechanical Strength at Nano-Scale Dimensions

The mechanical strengths of nano-scale individual crystal or nanopolycrystalline metals, and other dimensionally-related materials are increased by an order of magnitude or more as compared to those values measured at conventional crystal or polycrystal grain dimensions. An explanation for the result is attributed to the constraint provided at the surface of the crystals or, more importantly, a...

Spontaneous athermal cross-slip nucleation at screw dislocation intersections in FCC metals and L12 intermetallics investigated via atomistic simulations

In this manuscript, we extend on our prior work to show that under certain conditions cross-slip nucleation is athermal and spontaneous with zero activation energy in FCC elemental metals such as Ni and Cu, and L12 intermetallic compounds such as Ni3Al. Using atomistic simulations (molecular statics), we show that spontaneous cross-slip occurs at mildly repulsive intersections. Further, the loc...
